Yoshi Obana: keyboards, trumpet
Now established as a 4-piece band based in Glasgow, Scotland, The Tall Boy was
conceived back in 2001 as the solo project of Matty Green, whose previous bands
include Boyracer, Steward, Empress, Death by Chocolate and Girlboy Girl. It
was while he was on his own that he recorded the Tall Boy's debut album, Goes
On, which was released in 2003 by Arizona-based Red Square Records to critical
acclaim.
However, it wasn’t until Matty moved to Glasgow that The Tall Boy we know
today started to take shape. A more confident sound emerged as a result of songwriting
collaborations between Matty and bass player, James Barker. The second album
Effect was the result of these early collaborations.
This year The Tall Boy have been busier than ever. Following the arrival of
multi-instrumentalist, Yoshi Obana, the band have been playing regular live
shows in Glasgow and beyond, including a successful appearance at last Summer’s
Beached Festival in Scarborough supporting The Bluetones.
About Go Forth:
Go Forth, is the first release to feature recordings of the full band playing
together. Amongst other locations, recordings took place in the band's rehearsal
room - an upstairs room in a barn in Fife which the band share with local electropop
heros, Juno! If you listen closely enough you can hear the doves coo-ing in
the loft. The EP's title track was inspired by a nearby bridge, which Matty
and James visited in a hungover state following an intense evening of music
and refreshments in Dunfermline.
Reviews for Go Forth:
"One of the great things about doing a zine is getting sent lots
of music that you otherwise would not take a chance on because, for one reason,
maybe, you have never heard of the band and don’t wanna spend the money.
. That is the case with this Scottish 4-piece who are on the tiny indie label,
Banazan, The band is low-key but GO FORTH has an overflow of tasty hooks and
vocalist/guitarist Matty Green seems to be able to toss off anything he says
with a fair am! ount of confidence and flair. “Outside” chugs
along and could almost be called, “dancey.” While the stuttering
“And back Again” reminded me a bit of NYC’s Baskervilles.
If you don’t wanna sound like a bonehead asking the record clerk for
the Arctic Monkeys cd then ask him/her for this. You’ll be glad you
did." Dagger Zine
"An EP or mini LP? Seven songs which are quite brilliant, and very more-ish.
ie. you keep on playing it over and over… ‘45’s and books’
is a hit in a just world..." Beatnik
